The art of war
Sun Tzu said:

Better to subdue a country intact than to destroy it completely. The damage caused makes victory less impressive because the skillful, conquer without a fight.

Those who win battle after battle do not have supreme skill. Those who have supreme skill, use strategy to bend others without coming to conflict.

The best plan is to win by strategy and capture without siege and victory without prolonged warfare. Uproot fortifications without attacking and absorbing organizations without prolonged operations.

The rule of numbers
Sun Tzu said:

In executing an artful strategy;

• When 10 times greater, surround them
   

• When 5 times greater, attack them
   

• When 2 times greater, scatter them

If the enemy is ready to challenge;

• When fewer in number, evade them
   

• When unequal to the match, avoid them

Even when smaller opponents
have a strong position, the
larger superior opponent will win.

Errors of Leaders
Sun Tzu said:

Skillful leaders, who protect the organization, will be strong. If they are flawed, the state will be weak.

A leader can bring adversity to the state in 3 ways.

1. He orders the army to advance or retreat at the wrong time. This is interfering with the command
   .

2. He treats the military matters without knowledge of how it can cause disorder in the army
   .

3. He takes on the role of the commander without understanding the strategy of warfare

If the army is beset with disorders
and suspicious, the opposing forces
will take advantage of the situation,
thereby inviting defeat.

Five winning ways
Sun Tzu said:

1. Those who know when to fight and when not to fight

2. Those who know how to use the large or small

3. Those who agree on superior and inferior objectives

4. Those who prepare to lie in wait for the unprepared

5. Those who lead without interference from a ruler

Those who know these five strategies will win.
